The slab itself

What goes into a concrete slab before the pour?

A slab is only as good as what sits under it. At Rytren Concrete in Pearland, TX, a slab job starts with a look at the site: how big the pad needs to be, how the ground sits, and what the slab will carry. Then the crew builds wood forms to the outline, lays black poly as a vapor barrier, and sets a grid of rebar and wire mesh before any concrete arrives. Those layers are the ones you see in our own job photos, and they are the part of the work that disappears once the slab is finished. The pour is then leveled and finished to suit how the slab will be used. We build slabs for shops, garages and carports, home additions, patios and metal buildings across Pearland and the towns around it.

What goes under the pour

Four layers of work happen before concrete is placed. These are photos from Rytren Concrete jobs.

  1. 1 Crew member setting wood forms around a bare slab pad

    Forms

Wood forms are set to the outline of the slab, so the edges and shape are fixed before anything goes inside.

  2. 2 Black poly vapor barrier laid inside slab forms with a crew working at the far end

    Vapor barrier

Black poly goes down across the pad, so the slab does not sit directly on bare ground.

  3. 3 Rebar grid tied over black poly inside wood forms between two houses

    Steel

Rebar and wire mesh are laid out in a grid inside the forms, sized to what the slab will carry.

  4. 4 Overhead view of wet concrete being placed in a formed slab with steel still showing in the unpoured section

    Pour and finish

Concrete is placed, leveled and finished once the forms, poly and steel are in place.

How a slab job runs

From the first visit to the finished pour

Eric walks the job with you, explains the process and answers questions before any work is scheduled. Timing depends on the size of the slab, the weather and curing, and the quote visit sets the schedule.

  1. Eric looks at the job

He comes out to the site, sees what you want built and where, and talks through the slab with you.

  2. Quote and requirements

You get a quote and a plain explanation of the process. City and HOA requirements are checked where they apply.

  3. Forms, poly and steel

The crew sets the forms, lays the vapor barrier and ties the rebar and mesh before concrete is ordered to the site.

  4. Pour and finish

The slab is poured, leveled and finished, then left to cure before it goes into use.

Slab questions

Concrete slab FAQ for Pearland, TX

How much does a concrete slab cost in Pearland?

The price depends on the size of the slab, how thick it is, how much steel goes in it, how much site prep the ground needs and how easy it is to get equipment and concrete to the spot. Eric looks at the job before quoting, so the number fits your slab. Request a quote to get one.

How thick should my slab be, and does it need steel?

It depends on what the slab will carry. A patio slab and a shop or metal building slab are not asked to do the same job, so thickness and steel are matched to the use. Our slabs are formed with rebar and wire mesh over a vapor barrier. Eric explains the plan for your slab during the quote visit.

What site prep happens before a slab is poured?

The crew sets wood forms to the slab outline, lays black poly as a vapor barrier and sets the rebar and wire mesh. How much ground work comes first depends on the lot. Access matters too, because concrete trucks and crew need a clear way to reach the pad. City and HOA requirements are checked where they apply.

How long does a slab project take?

It depends on the size of the slab, the weather and the time concrete needs to cure. A small patio slab and a large shop slab are very different jobs. Eric sets the schedule at the quote visit, once he has seen the site and knows what needs to happen before the pour.

Which towns do you build slabs in?

We are based in Pearland and build slabs in Houston, Pasadena, Alief, League City, Sugar Land, Baytown, Missouri City, Atascocita, Texas City, Manvel and Friendswood.
